Eve Ensler wrote a piece at the Huffington Post titled "Boys with Tender Hearts and Big Dreams in Their Hoodies." In the post she writes about how she knows what it is like to be Trayvon Martin because of the violence women endure during their lifetime. While she does say she doesn’t know what it is like to be a PoC, the parallels she makes between violence against women are often based in western / white women’s experience. Most of her work has been in this manner focusing on what white women not only consider to be violence, without taking into context culture or how that violence changes depending on intersecting identities.
It isn’t surprising to me that someone like Eve Ensler would take a tragedy use it to her own advantage and promote her work. Aside from making false equivalencies between being a PoC and a white woman (you have white privilege Eve) the distancing that Eve does from George Zimmerman, as though she isn’t him but knows people like him is gross and ignorant. White women benefit from white supremacy, we may face violence but at no where near the levels of violence that WoC face and we are not fearful of the police or fear being stopped and frisked or being followed and killed by someone because we are deemed ‘suspicious.’ We would never be Trayvon Martin so pretending she knows what it is like to be him is her being blinded by white privilege.
Eve is George Zimmerman, just like every other white person in our society. Distancing ourselves from his actions is distancing ourselves from the privilege we have in society and how we benefit from white supremacy. It’s time we stop acting like we don’t.
